- When the stern wave catches up with the boat; either propelling it forward or breaking over the stern (possibly causing swamping).
How does it happen?
- When speed is reduced too quickly i.e. from being on the plane, to neutral.
- When travelling in a following sea.
Why is it called pooping?
The name comes from the French word for stern 'la poupe' therefore technically the poop deck is the stern deck. On classic sailign ships, this was usually elevated and was the helms position in order to navigate and observe the actions of the crew and sails.
