Removal of coastal / inland distinction. From January 2017, instructor certificates will not be endorsed with inland or coastal. The Principal of the training centre will ensure that staff are suitably qualified / experienced and will receive additional training and information to ensure they are able to carry out the tasks required of them.
All RYA instructor courses therefore will cover all aspects of the syllabus irrespective of location including basic tidal and navigational awareness to an appropriate level. Wherever possible this will be carried out practically and if not possible will be covered theoretically.
Pre-requisites: it will no longer be a formal requirement that pre-requisites (pre-entry assessments, powerboat level 2, safety boat, DI certificates) should be taken at a coastal location in order to complete the instructor course at a coastal location. Instructor course candidates should have sufficient coastal experience and knowledge to be arable to complete the course at the training location and will be made aware that insufficient ability demonstrated through the course may prevent a positive outcome. The candidate should also be made aware that it may be a requirement at a coastal centre that they hold a coastal powerboat certificate.
