Burns (first aid):

What you student's should be able to do / understand after the session:

  • Knowledge that burns are caused in a variety of ways
  • Understands how burns are classified by depth
  • Understands the general treatment for burns is cooling for 20 minutes
  • Knowledge than an electric shock can cause heart arrhythmias, in addition to an entry and exit wound
  • Knowledge of the treatment for a chemical splash in the eye
  • Understands how the severity of burns is assessed, and when hospital treatment is required
  • Understands the risk of infection and the type of wound covering to be used
  • Understands the risks of removing clothing that may be stuck to the skin and from items that may restrict the circulation
  • Understands that cream, oil or butter should never be used, including after sun cream 

What is a burn?

Usually caused by dry heat i.e. fire, sunburn, hot surface. (Also could be from radiation, chemicals, electricity)

What is a scald?

Usually caused by wet heat i.e. steam or hot liquids

Types of burns and scalds:

BURN SEVERITY & DEPTH ?

How to treat Minor Burns and Scalds?

  • Remove from source of burn
  • Remove excess clothing / jewellery
  • Cool wound with cool or luke warm running water for at least 20 minis
  • Keep casualty warm
  • Loosely cover burn with cling film or clean plastic bag to protect from infection
  • Call 111 if require further advice

How to treat severe burns and scalds?

  • If full thickness call emergency services or if burn is to eyes, face, hands or feet
  • Remove from source of burn
  • Avoid touching the burn
  • Cool wound with cool or luke warm running water for at least 20 mins
  • Reassure the casualty
  • Call emergency services 
  • Continue to cool burn for at least 20mins or until any pain subsides (never use ice, gels or creams)
  • Loosely cover burn with cling film or clean plastic bag to protect from infection

How to treat Electrical burns:

  • Carry out primary survey 
  • Switch off power source 
  • Once safe treat burn (minor external = as above OR non visible /internal = emergency services)

How to treat Chemical burns:

  • Always require immediate medical assistance. 
  • Carry out Primary survey 
  • Gloves before touching
  • Remove contaminated clothing
  • Do NOT wipe skin (spread chemical)
  • Wound under cool or luke warm running water for at least 20 mins to remove chemical & stop burning
  • Monitor whilst waiting for emergency services

Treatment for chemical splash in eye:

  • Wear gloves
  • Flush eye with clean running water (at least 20mins) - position affected eye to the side thats lower than the other eye
  • Contact emergency services (inform chemicals involved) 
  • Continue to rinse until emergency help arrives
