Rescue PWC course

Aim: To introduce candidates to the basic skills required for handling personal watercraft in rescue and support craft situations.

 

Duration: 1 day

 

Minimum age: 18

 

Pre-requisites: RYA PWC competency certificate, Valid first aid certificate, VHF certificate

 

Max ratios: 6 students: 1 instructor, 2 students: 1:PWC, 3 PWC : 1 instructor

 

Personal Kit requirements: Impact buoyancy aids (50N), Wet/dry suit, Gloves (preferably fingerless), Wetsuit boots (or similar)

 

Course content:

 

Safety

Understands:

IRPCS

PW use in differing sea conditions

Effective communication

Lee shore hazards

 

Basic mantenance

Understands:

PW pre-launch checks

Personal kit

PW safety kit

Basic engine maintenance/troubleshooting

 

Handling

Can:

Demonstrate the correct use of an appropriate length killcord at all times

Starting and stopping procedures

Capsize recovery (self rescue)

Reboarding in deep water

Close quarters, slow speed handling

Coming alongside another craft

 

Rescue techniques:

Can:

Aid another craft in distress

Man overboard recovery

Rescue an injured person

Rescue an unconscious person

Helm only rescue operation

Helm & crew rescue operations

Rescue board techniques
